Kapur Singh accepts the title of Nawab

Having failed to crush the Sikhs by force, the Mughal governor of Lahore offered them a title and a land grant in 1733. A Sarbatt Khalsa at Amritsar accepted, and Kapur Singh became Nawab and reorganised the Sikh fighting bands.

Zakariya Khan had governed Lahore since 1726, and Sikh bands had been raiding government treasuries and caravans in reply to his campaign against them. In 1733 Delhi agreed to a change of course. Subeg Singh, a Sikh who had worked for the Mughal administration, brought the offer to Amritsar at Vaisakhi: the title of Nawab, a land grant, and free access to the city.

The Sarbatt Khalsa debated the offer and accepted it. Kapur Singh then divided the fighters into the Buddha Dal for the older men and the Taruna Dal for the younger, with the Taruna Dal split into five bands. Baba Deep Singh led one of these.

The arrangement did not last. It collapsed in 1735, and the Sikhs scattered again into hills and forests.[EoS][EoS][EoS][EoS]
