Battle of Gujrat
The Second Anglo-Sikh War was decided at Gujrat, where Lord Gough massed his artillery and broke the Sikh line within hours. Sher Singh and Chatar Singh surrendered in March, and the Punjab was annexed before the month was out.
On the morning of 21 February 1849 the British line advanced, and the Sikh guns opened fire and gave away their positions. Gough halted his three divisions and brought about 100 guns to bear for some two hours. His infantry then took the Sikh positions.
The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism puts Sikh losses at 3,000 to 5,000 men and 53 guns, and British losses at 96 killed and 700 wounded. Wikipedia's summary gives 710 wounded. The entry also says Gough's figure of 60,000 Sikh troops was greatly exaggerated, since the treaty of 1846 had cut the army to a fraction of its old size.
Fighting ended on 11 March, when Sher Singh and Chatar Singh handed their swords to Major-General Gilbert, close to Rawalpindi. Lord Dalhousie proclaimed annexation on 29 March.[EoS][Web]
