BattleModern

The London Gazette of 25 November 1921 records the award to No. 1012 Sepoy Ishar Singh, 28th Punjabis, for an action near Haidari Kach in Waziristan on 10 April 1921. He was hit in the chest early in the fight, and the enemy seized his gun. He rallied two other men, took the gun back and fired it again.

Sent back to have his wound dressed, he went on helping the medical officer. He carried water to the wounded, used a rifle when the fire grew heavy and stood between the doctor and the enemy. He was presented with the medal at Rawalpindi in March 1922, and later rose to Captain.

The Gazette does not state a recipient's faith. Victoria Cross Online and SikhiWiki both describe him as the first Sikh recipient.[Src][Web][Web]
