Formerly Khidrana, a pool in the Malwa scrub where in December 1705 forty Sikhs who had earlier deserted Guru Ji at Anandpur returned and attained martyrdom fighting a pursuing Mughal force. Guru Ji tore up their letter of renunciation and named the place Muktsar, the pool of liberation.[EoS]
