Miharban Janamsakhi manuscripts
also Damdama manuscript of the Miharban Janam Sakhi
The two known manuscripts of the Miharban tradition, covering only part of a six-volume work.[EoS]
- Date
- 1828 (1885 Bk) for the main manuscript
- Held by
- Khalsa College, Amritsar
- Location
- Amritsar
- Provenance
- Documented
- Status: Held
- The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism (1992-98) says the college acquired the main manuscript after its discovery at Damdama Sahib in 1940, and a shorter second one in 1961. A modern reference guide says Panjab Digital Library holds scans. That site could not be reached to confirm this.
The work is linked with Sodhi Miharban, leader of the Mina group who rivalled the Gurus. Only the first three volumes survive, plus an account of the passing of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji preserved in a Bala recension.
The college published the text in two volumes in 1962 and 1969.
What is disputed
- How close to Miharban is it?
The Encyclopaedia says the surviving text is late and heavily expanded, and that his own contribution can hardly be separated out.[EoS]
