The settlement Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji founded on the right bank of the Ravi around 1521, where Guru Ji farmed and taught for the last years of life, and passed away in 1539. A visa-free corridor from India opened in 2019, and India suspended it in May 2025.[EoS]

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji founds Kartarpur
Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji settles on the Ravi, farms, and establishes the pattern of early prayer, kirtan, the shared kitchen and honest work that defines Sikh community life.

Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji succeeds Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Having nominated Lehna on 13 June and renamed him Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji installs him a few days before passing away at Kartarpur on 7 September 1539.

Kartarpur corridor opens
India and Pakistan open a visa-free corridor from Dera Baba Nanak to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur, where Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent the last years of life. It opens before Guru Ji's 550th birth anniversary.

India suspends the Kartarpur corridor
India closes its side of the Kartarpur corridor during the crisis with Pakistan that followed the Pahalgam attack. As of early November 2026 it remains closed from the Indian side, while Pakistan says its side is open.
