The Encyclopaedia, drawing on the chronicles, describes Bibi Amaro as knowing many hymns by heart and singing them over her morning housework at Basarke. Sri Guru Amar Das Ji, then a pious Vaishnava related to her by marriage, overheard her and was deeply moved.

He wanted to see the living successor of the man who had made such verses. She took him to Khadur, and he never left.

How do we know?

Several traditional accounts tell this story, without close independent support.

  • ScholarshipCredits her with introducing him and says she sang the hymns during her chores.[EoS]
  • ScholarshipAdds an earlier scene of a sadhu chiding him for having no guru, and dates the journey to 1540.[EoS]
