Sri Guru Ram Das Ji: the day of a Guru's Sikh
From the Var of Gauri by Sri Guru Ram Das Ji. It is often quoted as a picture of a Sikh's day: rising early, bathing, meditating, singing the hymns, and keeping remembrance through the working day.
Anyone who wants to be called a Sikh of the true Guru gets up early and turns their mind to God's Name.
audham kare bhalake parabhaatee isanaan kare anmirat sar naavai
They make the effort in the early hours, washing and bathing in the pool of nectar.
Note. 'Amrit sar', the pool of nectar, is read as the immersion of the mind in the Name. Many readers also hear the pool at Amritsar.
fir chaRai dhivas gurbaanee gaavai bahadhiaa uThadhiaa har naam dhiaavai
Then, as the day comes up, they sing the Guru's words, and keep God's Name in mind whether sitting or standing.
jo saas giraas dhiaae meraa har har so gursikh guroo man bhaavai
Whoever remembers God with every breath and every mouthful is the Sikh the Guru loves.
