History

1590 to 1596
The tank and Sri Darbar Sahib
On 13 April 1590 Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji began converting a natural pond beside the Delhi to Lahore highway into a tank, and full digging began that August. Once digging finished on 19 March 1596, building of Sri Darbar Sahib began.[EoS]
1802 onward
Royal patronage
Maharaja Ranjit Singh visited in 1802 and had the unfinished steps of the sarovar completed and its walkway paved. He and his grandson Kanwar Nau Nihal Singh gave gold for plating the exterior.[EoS]
