Companion of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji; martyred at Delhi

Bhai Sati Das

ਭਾਈ ਸਤੀ ਦਾਸBhāī Satī Dās

Bhai Sati Das was the younger brother of Bhai Mati Das and a companion of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. He was arrested with Guru Ji in 1675 and martyred at Delhi on 11 November 1675. Far less is recorded about him than about his brother, and the accounts of his martyrdom differ.

Service

His father, Bhai Hira Mal, also called Hira Nand, belonged to the Chhibber family, and his uncle Dargah Mall was diwan to the Gurus. The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism cites the Bhatt Vahi Talauda for his work as Guru Ji's cook. Gupta quotes a Bhatt Vahi entry that adds the word for cook to his name, and elsewhere he places him over Guru Ji's correspondence.

He was detained with Guru Ji at Dhamtan in 1665. Gupta shows him travelling with Guru Ji in the east, and says that Guru Ji took him and his brother on from Patna while others stayed with the family.[EoS][EoS][Gupta]

Arrest and martyrdom

He was with Guru Ji again when the party left Anandpur in July 1675. Gupta quotes a Bhatt Vahi entry that places the arrest near Ropar on 12 July, followed by four months' custody at Bassi Pathanan.

At Delhi he refused to give up his faith. Bhai Mati Das and Bhai Dayala were martyred before him or beside him, depending on the account. The Encyclopaedia says he was wrapped in cotton wool and burned alive, on 11 November 1675, the day Guru Ji himself was martyred. It cites Shahid Bilas and other later works among its sources.

Gupta gives another account. He says Bhai Sati Das condemned what was being done to his companions and was cut to pieces limb by limb. He adds that Bhai Jaita, in disguise, gathered the remains of the martyrs and gave them to the Yamuna.

The date and the fact of his martyrdom are common to the accounts that name him. The manner of it has not been settled, and no Mughal record of it has been read for this page.[EoS][Gupta]

What the sources disagree on

  • How he was martyred

The Encyclopaedia says he was wrapped in cotton and burned. Gupta says he was cut limb from limb.[EoS][Gupta]

  • Whether all accounts name him

Macauliffe's narrative of the events at Delhi describes Bhai Mati Das, but its text as read does not mention Bhai Sati Das at all.[Macauliffe]
