Son of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji; martyred at Chamkaur

Sahibzada Jujhar Singh

ਸਾਹਿਬਜ਼ਾਦਾ ਜੁਝਾਰ ਸਿੰਘSāhibzādā Jujhār Siṅgh

Sahibzada Jujhar Singh was a son of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Mata Jito. The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism and Gupta have him martyred at Chamkaur at fourteen, beside his elder brother. Other accounts swap his fate with that of his brother Zorawar Singh.

Early life

The Encyclopaedia says he was born at Anandpur on 14 March 1691, the second son of Guru Ji and the first of three born to Mata Jito. It says he started martial training while learning the sacred texts. He received the rites of the Khalsa in 1699, at the age of eight. Mata Jito passed away on 5 December 1700, when he was nine.[EoS][EoS]

Chamkaur

In December 1705 he crossed the flooded Sarsa on horseback with Guru Ji and reached Chamkaur on the evening of the 6th. The Encyclopaedia says he took part the next day in beating back repeated assaults on the fortified house. When ammunition and arrows ran out, the Sikhs went out in parties of five.

He led the last of these sorties near the close of the day, and he was martyred close to where he had seen his elder brother fall. He was then fourteen. Gurdwara Qatalgarh at Chamkaur marks the spot.

The official letter quoted in the Ahkam-i-Alamgiri confirms that two of Guru Ji's sons fell at Chamkaur, without naming them. The names come from Sikh sources.[EoS][EoS][EoS][Gupta]

Why the accounts differ

The confusion is old. Sainapati's Sri Gur Sobha, the nearest narrative source, names Sahibzada Jujhar Singh as fighting at Chamkaur and also pairs him with Sahibzada Fateh Singh in its lines on the sacrifice at Sirhind. Its translator, following Ganda Singh, treats the second as a slip of the poet's.

Macauliffe, who says he follows the Suraj Prakash and a Gurbilas, makes Zorawar Singh the second son and has him fall at Chamkaur. He then makes Jujhar Singh the third son, born in the month of Magh, Sambat 1753, and has him martyred at Sirhind at nine. He adds in a note that others give 1747 Bikrami as Jujhar Singh's birth year.

The Encyclopaedia and Gupta place Sahibzada Jujhar Singh at Chamkaur, and the Encyclopaedia describes the gurdwara and annual fair there that remember him.[Src][Macauliffe][EoS][Gupta]

What the sources disagree on

  • Which son fell at Chamkaur

The Encyclopaedia and Gupta say Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh. Macauliffe says Ajit Singh and Zorawar Singh, and puts Jujhar Singh at Sirhind. Sainapati names Jujhar Singh in both places.[EoS][Gupta][Macauliffe][Src]

  • Date of Chamkaur

The Encyclopaedia dates the battle to 7 December 1705, and Gupta to 22 December 1704.[EoS][Gupta]
