A mid-1800s fresco at Gurdwara Baba Bir Singh imagining Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji compiling the Adi Granth with Bhai Gurdas, with the Bhagats present. Mahima Prakash and later chronicles, as summarised in the Encyclopaedia, tell how Balvand and Satta asked for all the Vaisakhi offerings of one year to pay for a family wedding. Guru Ji agreed, but the takings fell short, and they demanded more. When he refused they walked out, sure that the congregation would melt away without them, and spoke rudely of the house of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji when he came to them.

They were shunned, and the story says they fell ill with leprosy. A Sikh named Laddha pleaded for them. They were forgiven and cured, and their Var followed.

How do we know?

Several traditional accounts tell this story, without close independent support.

This reports what the chronicles say about the illness and cure, and the site does not assert or deny them. The Var itself is not evidence for the quarrel.

  • ScholarshipGives the full quarrel, Laddha's plea and the composition of the Var.[EoS]
  • ScholarshipDescribes Guru Ji's inclusion of their Var in the Granth as an honour, without the quarrel.[EoS]
