Anand: the opening of the song of bliss
Sri Guru Amar Das Ji's Anand is sung in part or in full at Sikh ceremonies, including weddings and funerals. Its subject is a joy that does not depend on circumstances. This is its first stanza.
anandh bhiaa meree maae satiguroo mai paiaa
Mother, I am overjoyed: I have found the true Guru.
satigur ta paiaa sahaj setee man vajeeaa vaadhaieeaa
I found the Guru, and with that came inner poise, and my mind is ringing with celebration.
raag ratan paravaar pareeaa sabadh gaavan aaieeaa
It is as if every melody and its whole family has arrived to sing the Word.
Note. The raags and their companions are pictured here as people arriving to sing.
sabadho ta gaavahu haree keraa man jinee vasaiaa
Sing the Word of God, all of you who have settled it in your minds.
kahai naanak anandh hoaa satiguroo mai paiaa
Nanak says: I am full of joy, for I have found the true Guru.
