Japji, closing salok: air the teacher, water the father

The closing salok of Japji. It places human life within the natural world, says that conduct is weighed, and ends with those who remembered the Name being freed, along with many others.

  1. 1
pavan guroo paanee pitaa maataa dharat mahat

Air is our teacher, water our father, and the vast earth our mother.

  2. 2
dhivas raat dhui dhaiee dhaiaa khelai sagal jagat

Day and night mind us like a pair of nurses while the whole world plays.

  3. 3
    changiaaieeaa buriaaieeaa vaachai dharam hadhoor

Every good and bad act is read out before the judge of right and wrong.

  4. 4
karamee aapo aapanee ke neRai ke dhoor

Our own actions decide who comes close and who ends up far away.

  5. 5
jinee naam dhiaaiaa ge masakat ghaal

Those who held the Name in mind have finished their labour and gone.

  6. 6
naanak te mukh ujale ketee chhuTee naal

Nanak says their faces shine, and many others go free alongside them.
